Electrical appliances, wires and plug points are commonly seen in all houses. While the use of them have infiltrated into all aspects of our life, people are still behind when it comes to electrical safety. This results in various hazards that can even be fatal.

Follow these simple tips while handling electrical appliances, wires etc. and keep away from rude shocks! (Literally!)

Appliances

  • Don’t handle electrical appliances or plugs with wet hands.
  • Make sure the appliances that generates heat, such as television, fridge, computers etc., are given a couple of inches of clearance all around to allow good air circulation.
  • Study the user manual of an appliance before venturing out into using them. Follow its safety guidelines and never attempt to repair it on your own.
  • Always keep electrical devices unplugged when not in use.
  • Make sure that these devices are placed at a safe distance from water and heat.
  • The power source should be disconnected before servicing any electrical appliance.

 Cords and plugs

  • Don’t load an extension cord by plugging in various devices at the same time. Not only could this cause damages to the electrical cords, it can even result in a fire.
  • Always pull a plug and not a cord while trying to disconnect an electrical device.
  • Check for frayed cords on a regular basis. If the wiring is visible, always get the help of an electrician to fix them.
  • Inspect all cords before using them. Don’t try to modify it on your own.
  • Don’t place cords under rugs or in any such discreet locations as the frays might go unnoticed.
  • Keep a safe distance between cords and sources of water or heat.
  • Refrain from stapling or nailing cords in position. Stick to basic tapes to keep them intact.
  • Use high rated extension cords. Consider these extensions as a temporary solution. For a permanent one, reach out to an electrician!

 Fuse and Outlets

  • Before fixing a blown fuse, turn off all the appliances connected to this circuit.
  • Always replace a fuse with one that has an identical rating.
  • Regularly check for loose fuses. When left unchecked, loose fuses have a tendency to overheat and might result in electrical damages.
  • Outdoor outlets have a different set of safety regulations. Get the help of a trained electrician to handle this for you. Ensure that ground fault interrupters are used in these outlets.

On top of all this, ensure that kids are always monitored while handling any electrical devices. Baby proof electrical wiring if you have kids at home.

While it is critical that you keep these tips in mind and follow them at home, always get the help of a professional electrician to handle any electrical work. Even if it seems like a minor fix, reach out to a trained expert to deal with these to avoid any mishaps!
