And this is how the year ends. Not with a whimper but with a bang. With candlelight vigils, with hope in our hearts and with a rising determination to stand up for what we think is our right. 2013 can only be better than what this year has been. Despite the doomsayers predicting the end of the world, people invested in the future,set up homes, traveled, celebrated their accomplishments and pledged change.

As you and I plan our evening out tonight, this is perhaps what the Mayan calendar makers missed out on; the audacity of hope that the human spirit lives on. Not to be confused with the tipplers’ spirit that may be in full flow for the next few hours - what with the hotels being given extended deadlines till 2 am, party hoppers are in for a treat.

For those wanting to stay at home – the my kind of people – hey, we can still party if our friends hop over and we have a well-stocked kitchen and the spirit to enjoy.

The party I am having tonight will have lots of nibbles that can be bought from the store and fried over. A quick dish with some ready to eat Malabar parathas or flavoured rice, and some mocktails and cocktails to go with it. The children can order some pizza and play some music and stay out of sight while the adults can talk, play some guitar, listen to our kind of music, crack jokes as we start the count down to bring in the New Year!

If you are planning to go out for a party, make sure you don’t drink and drive. Better still, get a driver. Or get somebody else to drive for you. Take care as the traffic is expected to be bad.

Have fun with friends and family. Say a little prayer of thanks to whomsoever above and stay safe.
