‘What dolls should I buy? Will these idols go with my Golu theme? Where shall I go for shopping? – These were the questions that popped inside my mind soon after I decided to array my first ever Golu on my own,’ explains Y Karthika, an excited enthusiast who has lined up her cute little idols at her home.

This newly-married woman is happy a lot about exhibiting her first Golu at her home. She shares her experience and explains how this festival is routed with our custom and traditional practices.

‘Basically, I didn’t get the chance to host or ‘do-it-on-my-own’ Golu events as I was studying by staying here at my relative’s house. Still, I used to see how they conduct it and what they do, etc. However, as I got married, I came to know that my in-laws who belong to Indore, celebrate Golu in a grand manner. So, I also wanted to deck up our home with colourful dolls and other spiritual idols. This is when I decided to host my first ever Golu at our residence,’ Karthika shares with much happiness.

Talking about how she was excited to go on shopping, she says, ‘The shopping ideas were totally word of mouth. My relatives suggested several places to buy the best idols. Since this is my first time, I bought all the basic idols of Lord Sivan, Parvathi, Pillayar, Murugan, etc.’

‘I also bought idols that will adorn our sweet home. I got half of my dolls from T Nagar. However, buying dolls at Mada Veethi Street in Mylapore after all the bargaining chaos is such an experience. I totally loved it,’ Karthika chuckles.

While sharing about concepts followed in Golus’, Karthika says, ‘It is really inspiring to see several women coming up with ideas like eco-friendly Golu, save water Golu, afforestation Golu, etc. However, my perception of Golu is how we share the history of Purana stories to the next generation. I concentrated much on dolls that tell the story of our Puranas. Because, in today’s world, wherever we turn, children learn about Rain Water Harvesting and other social campaigns. But no one gets time to read Purana stories. Also, the nuclear family system has totally isolated our kids from those historical stories. So, Golu exhibition is one golden opportunity for us to explain those epic creations to our children.’

As a first-time Golu host, Karthika shares her point of view about Golu. ‘I respect those who feature antique Golu dolls and those who host big Golu exhibitions. But this is a festival where people used to visit the places of their loved ones in a bunch. So, one can hardly spend 15-20 minutes of time in a place. In such a scenario, one can make the exhibition place compact and concentrate on story-telling. This will effectively help the children in knowing historic tales instead of just sparing a look over them. Once again, I never object bigger Golu exhibitions,’ Karthika says it with a positive note.
