How To Get A Food License For My Business?

If you are planning to do a business, you can very well start with food business. No food business can be commenced unless a valid license is obtained, therefore, it becomes essential to get a license.
Here’s what you need to do:
STEP 1 – Filling Application Form B
Whether you are looking to get a new license or renew the existing one, the application form remains the same. According to the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses), Regulations 2011, you need to fill the application form B. Read the instructions carefully and fill the form.
STEP 2 – Documents required
After filling the application form, you need to attach the following documents to it:
1. A self-attested declaration as provided in the format in Annexure-1
2. Copies of documents provided in Annexure-2 of the Regulations.
3. Fees prescribed in Schedule-3 depending upon the category your food business falls in.
Send these documents along with the filled application form to the Licensing Authority (State or Central). In case if they require any additional information, you will be informed within 15 days from the time you apply. Accordingly, you need to submit your application according to the time period mentioned.
STEP 3 – Application ID number
After the completed application has been received by the authority, you will receive an Application ID number. This number will be helpful in all your future reference to communicate with you and the Licensing Authority.
STEP 4 – Inspection by the Authority
According to the Food Safety and Standard Authority regulation of India, once you get the ID number, you can expect an inspection that will be carried out by the Licensing Authority to the premises where the business is likely to get opened. The inspection officer may check and guide you through necessary steps to be taken or changes to be made in your premises to ensure general sanitary and hygienic conditions. Within the time period mentioned by the Licensing Authority, you need to carry out the necessary changes. After 30 days from the inspection time, the concerned Licensing Authority shall consider the application and may either grant a license or reject the application.
STEP 5 – Issue of License
When all the formalities are cleared and if the licensing authority has decided to provide you with a food license, then it will be issued in Format C under Schedule 2 of the Food Safety and Standard Authority regulation. It is advisable to display a true copy of the license issued within your business premises.
The whole process can be done through an online medium as well. Fill the online form which can be found in the Food Safety and Standard Authority website. You will receive a unique reference ID for the application. Just take the print out of the ‘Acknowledgment’ and ‘Online Application Form’ and attach the fee and supported documents required. Submit the application to your State Authority or Regional Office of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, within 15 days from the date of submission of application online.
