“Impressions”- Indian weaves and Block print exhibition inaugurated“Impressions- An Exhibition of Traditional Indian Weaves and Hand Block Prints” organised by Hast Karigar Society was inaugurated by Dr. Nanditha Krishna at the Lalit Kala Akademi today. This is the fifth edition of the exhibition in Chennai.The Highlights of the exhibition included an array of mesmerizing and breathtaking collection of contemporary fabrics, textiles and made-ups imprinted with the intricate designs produced with the colourful and tradition-based hand block prints of Akola, Sanghaner, Choubundi Dabu, Bagru, Tie & Dye, and Shibori from Rajasthan, Bag, Tarapore Indigo and Batik from Madhya Pradesh, Ajrak from Gujarat and Kalamkari from Andhra Pradesh.The combination of traditional shades of colour and intricately cut hand blocks set in contemporary designs and patterns create a range of stunning Impressions emerging out of the fabric.Traditional weaves in the form of Chanderi and Maheswari from Madhya Pradesh, Tussar from Bihar, Jamdani Weaves from West Bengal, Ikat from Orissa, Kantha Embroidery from West Bengal, Applique Work from Rajasthan, Kosa from Maharashtra, Extra Weaves from Rajasthan,  Banarasi sarees from U.P, Kota from Rajasthan, Lumbani embroidery from Karnataka and traditional embroidery from Rajasthan have an equally exciting and compelling effect.Accessories in the form of thread, tribal and filigree jewellery and stationeries wrapped in block prints were on sale. A special attraction at the exhibition was the live demonstration of the art of hand block printing.Most of the products are environment friendly and safe for use. The Society and its members believe in sustainable economic production and livelihood where renewable resources are used and mechanization is regulated with the minimal use of non-renewable resources.One can find  fabric, sareess, stole, scarf, duppatta, kurta, bed cover, cushion cover and curtain,  made ups, Gond painting, Pattachitra, Madhubani painting, necklace, ear-ring, bangles, pendant, bracelet and wristlet etc of silver, copper and lac. Hast Karigar organizes the exhibition of the works of Artisans from all over the Nation every year. This year, the exhibition, showcases a vintage collection of weaves and wares in contemporary style. Traditional painters, jewelers, weavers and hand block printers from all over India were found displaying their unique skills.
