Catering Experts:Vishwanathan's home-made sweets for Diwali

For a person who has been in the catering and sweet-making business for over 16 years, doing a brisk business during festivals is nothing new. And so it is not surprising that Vishwanathan, who has been answering his constantly ringing mobile to take orders this Diwali, spots no sweat on his brow.   

 “Right from Navarathri to Pongal, sweets are an integral part of festivals and that’s when our hands are full with orders,’’ he says. Even as he is saying this, there is a call from a customer. “Busy time,” he laughs.

I find Vishwanathan at Kesava Perumal Sannathi Street, Mylapore with his four employees, in his house cum shop readying to feed the sweet frenzy of Chennai this Diwali.

His specialities, he says are the ghee Mysore pak, along with Bournvita cake, Pista roll and Kaju katli. He also makes a variety of savories like mixers, kara sev, kara boondi, ribbon pakoda, murukku and so on.

Vishwananthan makes it a point to deliver the sweets to his customers’ doorstep. “The minimum order that one can place is half-a-kg. But I provide door delivery if the quantity is more than 5 kg,” he clarifies.

He uses high quality ingredients in the sweets that are prepared hygienically. “Hygiene is given utmost importance, otherwise we cannot survive in this business for 16 years,” he says.

His price list: Kaju katli Rs. 650 a kg, Pista roll is priced at Rs. 600 a kg, pure ghee Mysore pak Rs. 480 a kg. Other sweets like Bournvita cake, jangree and laddu are priced at Rs. 300 a kg while the savories are priced between Rs. 240 and Rs. 260. Customers also can buy assorted sweet boxes for Rs 320 per box.

Vishwanathan takes Diwali sweet orders between October 27 and 31 and delivers them by November 1.
