This Diwali try Mylapore's Leela and Narayana Sharma's home-made sweets

After feasting on Anandan’s special lip-smacking delicacies, I find myself maneuvering through the tricky bylanes of Mylapore, in a bid to find Chennai’s best homemade Diwali treats. The end of my journey, today, sees me in a rather small house (which doubles as a kitchen and storage space). It calls itself Prythiangara Catering and is known for its tasty home-made sweets and food. This time around, to mark Diwali, the outfit has even devised a special lunch menu!

Let me go against tradition and begin with the sweets. “There are many caterers who make homemade sweets, but our specialities are laddu, rava laddu and Mysore pak,” explains Leela, who manages the business with her husband Narayana Sharma. They have been in the business of making special lunches and sweets for around six years.

“Our sweets are prepared in a very hygienic manner, in our own kitchen, and we have experienced cooks who give the food the expert’s touch,” says Sharma proudly. Only refined oil is used and all the raw material is sourced from wholesale markets, in a bid to maintain the quality. Leela says, “We never compromise on quality as that is the USP of this business.”

The prices of these sweets are on par with what’s out there in the market. Sweets like laddu, badusha, jangree, Mysore pak and rava laddu cost Rs 360 a kg. “Our minimum order is 1 kg and we have no cap on the maximum,” says Leela.

Their other USP is the special Diwali lunch. Costing Rs 175, the menu consists of laddu, kadamba sambhar, pineapple rasam, avial, potato curry, beans, paruppu vadai, thayir chutney, beetroot sweet pachadi, paruppu payasam and more. You can also opt for this lunch without rice and curd, for Rs 150.

“We offer free home delivery even for one lunch or one kilo of sweets,” says Leela, adding that since most customers prefer home delivery, it is a major source of business (many of their competitors do not offer home delivery services for small quantities).

The catering company has now spread its wings to Velachery, T Nagar, West Mambalam, Thiruvanmiyur, Besant Nagar, Neelangarai and Kottivakkam. You can contact the outfit on 24621072, 22434980, 9941127141 or 9094650100 and place your order. It will take a couple of days for the order to be executed.

If you’re a working professional and don’t have the time to enter the kitchen and whip up festive delicacies, this entrepreneurial couple could be the answer to all your prayers! Leave the business of sweets to the professionals, and enjoy yourself this Diwali.
