6 Medical Tests Men Must Get Done

Elisa Vincent 7 years ago

Regular health screening is a must to keep a check on your body functioning. Just like a machine, our body also tends to wear and tear with age. There are some tests which need to be done every 5 years and some more frequently with age.  It is advised that everyone above 40 should go for regular full body health checkups to be on top of their health.

Here are 6 health screenings men should have at regular intervals:

Lipid profile

Lipid profile is a broad screening for any abnormalities in the lipids, used to determine if the individual is at any risk of heart diseases. The tests include checking for cholesterol and triglycerides. LDL or the bad cholesterol and HDL, the good cholesterol, are both measured here. With lifestyle being a determinant of cholesterol issues, it is good to start checking for this as early as 20 years old, once every 5 years, increasing the frequency with age.

Liver function test

Liver functioning is critical to one’s health. It does a number of functions such as breaking down the food, making proteins and storing energy. It is a series of tests that measure the level of certain enzymes in our body and proteins in our blood. This screening should begin early if you have a family history of liver diseases or are a heavy drinker.

Blood pressure

Checking your blood pressure regularly should be a habit that begins early. Hypertension is a common health disorder and a high BP puts stress on your heart. 120/80 is the ideal blood pressure one should aim for. If your readings are abnormal, your doctor might put you on medication and recommend a frequent check on the levels.

Diabetes

A fasting blood sugar test and your tolerance for glucose absorption are checked to understand if you are at any risk for diabetes. If you do not have a family history of diabetes, this test is required only after the age of 45. If you are overweight or show other signs like high BP, then your medical practitioner might prescribe this test earlier.

Cancer screenings

Colorectal cancer screening, prostate cancer screening, lunch and skin cancer screening etc. should be mandatorily done after the age of 50. This screening can be done earlier if you have a family history of any of these or if you start showing any symptoms. The required tests can be repeated every 5 years to ensure good health.

Eye exam

Regular eye examination can help you rule out eye issues such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinopathy etc. It is good to do a general eye check up every 1 to 3 years after the age of 18. Meanwhile, if you have diabetes, it is advised to check your vision more regularly.

Thyroid screening. Vitamin D test, etc. are also important health screening to be done regularly. The lifestyle of the present generation has increased the occurrence of various diseases which were not prevalent in earlier years. Hence, keeping that in mind, going to a good diagnostic centre and keeping a regular check on your health is mandatory!
