As my earlier blog showed, http://homeneeds.sulekha.com/cctv-a-must-chennai-cops_605091_blog, I met a couple of cops from the Chennai police who gave their views on security systems that most citizens in the country should have.

Apart from this, they also gave some important tips for ensuring security while employing maids and security guards in our homes.

According to the cops:

• Residents should verify all the information given by security guards, maids etc before they are hired.
• It is advisable to keep a copy of their identification proof. When residents have a copy of their ID proof, the maids or security guards do not tend to indulge in any mal practice for the fear of getting caught.
• Always keep all your valuables locked and safe.
• Do not use maids or security personnel for any personal work. 
• Never entertain people like food delivery, gas cylinder refill and sales people for a long time and indulge in unnecessary conversations which can pave way for any untoward ideas and happenings.
• Also making the visitors sign in a register when entering apartment complexes must be made mandatory. 
• One should also not invite home delivery guys late in the night and this should be preferably done between 8 and 9 PM.  “It is a good idea to keep money ready on the table or near at hand, and pay off the home delivery guys without any delay”, said a cop.
• Do not discuss finances or impending marriages before maids.  “Many crimes begin when residents start discussing finances or family issues when maids or security guards are present. This should be avoided completely”, added another cop.

So I shall end with the words of the cops: If we stay alert and maintain a constant vigil, security cannot be compromised at any cost. The key to stay secure is in our hands!
