Order Of Packing: What To Pack First When You Are Moving?

Terence Morais 5 years ago

To bring order to the chaos of moving, one should know what to pack first and what should go last. Sometimes a box gets packed but left halfway because you think some other box needs your immediate attention. There’s no point in packing when you’re sitting on the fence about it. Select a plan of action and stick to it. Start from the barely used room and pack your way up to the frequently used rooms. Here’s a foolproof order of packing for you:

  • Garage, Closet & Store Rooms:

Start with the storage spaces of your home because they’re almost always already packed and it’s easy to pack them. It’s good to start here even if your things aren’t in boxes already because it can take long to sort and pack. If you leave it till the eleventh hour, you’ll never have time to get to it.

  • Spare Rooms:

Occasionally-used rooms are easy to pack because they contain minimal things to pack. Starting with the spare rooms and packing them off should give you a sense of achievement and encourage your packing.

  • Kitchen:

The next to go into a box is the kitchen. There is a large number of things, from a small bowl to heavy grinders, to pack in this room. It also has fragile items such as glasses and chinaware to padded and packed away. Another kicker with this room is the things which have been forgotten and hidden away in all the nooks and crannies. You cannot circle back to this room in the end because there’s never time.

  • Living Room:

This is a room of big furniture and electronic devices such as couches, sofas, coffee table, TV, sound system, cabinets, bookshelves, and desktop computer. Packing these up cannot be left to the last moment because wrapping and padding them up will take a long time and you have to make sure that these expensive things don’t get damaged while moving.

  • Bedroom:

This should be the penultimate room to pack because where else would you rest during the tiresome packing process. The bed should be the last heavy furniture to be packed followed by the clothes.

  • Bathroom:

The room to be packed at the absolute last because you’ll need it daily during your packing days. It is in the best interest of everyone who lives with you to pack it on the day or evening before moving day.

Here are a few items that should be packed early:

  • Artworks & Photo Frames: This can be packed early because they are non-essential and you’ll not be needing them in your packing days.
  • Collectibles: The coin collection, stamp collection, and action figure collection should be packed early.
  • Books & Magazines: Will you be reading your favorite book or magazine when you should be packing? No. In the boxes, they go.
  • Clothes & Shoes: These items should be packed early leaving the ones you’ll need during the move.
  • Jewelry: It should be packed early so that you do not stuff them in random boxes in the last minute.
  • Kitchenware: Many items are there in your kitchen and some are fragile. They should not be nagging you till the end to go into boxes.

The last box to pack should be the first box that should be opened in your new house, so pack it accordingly. This plan of action should take you smoothly through your packing process. Now, you’re ready to get connected with the packers and movers.
