Wall Painting- Basic Do's and Don'ts

DIY painting might seem like a fun idea but let us warn you, it requires a lot of patience and the right techniques without a say. Painting is not just about slapping some color on to the walls. Not to forget, the amount of time it takes to get the techniques and paint finish right. Having said that, your painting experience can be fruitful and hassle-free if you follow some basic do’s and don’ts mentioned below.

     DO's:

  • Assess your wall paint requirements
  • Do your own research and streamline your painting activities
  • To start with, set a budget always
  • Invest in good quality paints and painting tools
  • Choose eco-friendly paints over chemical paints
  • Purchase painting tools such as rollers depending on the type of paint you choose and the wall smoothness
  • Buy all the painting in supplies
  • Check if you would require wall primer and putty
  • Declutter your room. Create ample of space by moving out all the belongings
  • Cover up you’re your belonging and floor using a dust cloth
  • Use the top of the paintbrush as it doesn’t leave any brush strokes or marks.
  • Emulsion paints must be applied in different directions to blend in the brush marks
  • Be patient and be attentive while prepping the wall
  • Wear loose comfortable clothes while you are it
  • Fill in the cracks by applying putty
  • Prime the walls in advance
  • Always do a patch test. Paint a small foam board and move it around the room to see how the daylight affects the color
  • Let the room dry completely for 24 hours

     Don’ts:

  • Do not rush into painting. Right prepping will help you save time and effort
  • Don’t skip on the wall prep work. Spend a considerable amount of time to prime and smoothen the wall
  • Don’t paint on bare walls or any active molds
  • Don’t dilute all paints at once. Diluted paints meteorite faster while non-diluted paint can last for up to 3 years
  • Don’t paint directly from the paint tin. Always transfer into smaller containers. Dipping the brush back and forth in the tin can cause too many lumps.
  • Don’t keep the windows and doors shut. Proper air ventilation helps to get rid of the odor as well as dries the wall faster
  • Avoid painting on rainy days
  • Don’t forget to clean the painting tools used
  • Don’t dispose of the paint. Always save it as it would come handy to do touch-ups in the near future
