Here's How You Groom Your Feline Friend!

If you are a cat owner, you probably can attest firsthand to the fact that your pet is a fastidious groomer. With in-built cleaning tools like their tongue and teeth, your feline mates are neat freaks and spend most of their lives grooming (and sleeping). When you compare cats to other pets, they are low maintenance (Lucky you, cat owner) But as enthusiastic as your cat might seem about self-grooming, the truth is they could take a little bit of your help.

Grooming doesn’t just mean the beautification of your already handsome buddy. It is a necessary activity that helps you keep a tab on its health.

  • Talking about grooming, first things first. Don’t just grab your cat one day and unexpectedly introduce them to the grooming process. This will just turn out to be an unpleasant experience for both the parties.  Slowly accustom your pet to the practice. Pick them up when they are relaxed and start stroking them gently. Ideally, you should have started this when your pet was a kitten. Even if your cat seems to not enjoy this activity during its commencement, they will grow fond of it over time. Regular sessions with a brush will help in maintaining your pet’s coat and removing tangles.
  • As a cat owner, it’s completely understandable if the idea of bathing your pet sends shivers down your spine. You probably already know that your cat will put up considerable resistance and thankfully, more often than not, they don’t require a full-blown bath. But sometimes the good old tongue-bath doesn’t suffice and your cat’s coat gets dirty or sticky. Then, you must know that it’s time for the Thing-That-Must-Not-Be-Named. Start by using lukewarm water and a cat shampoo to bathe your pet. Start shampooing from your pet’s head and work your way through. Make sure your cat’s nails are clipped before exposing them to their least favorite activity.

  • You should, preferably, trim the nails on all the four paws every alternate week. Train your cat to get comfortable with you maneuvering its limbs. Give your cat a foot massage everyday so that they get used to you handling their paws.

  • Shedding is your pet’s natural way of losing dead hair and they shed all around the year. Regularly grooming your cat can relatively lessen the inconvenience of shedding. Sometimes, as a cat owner, you will notice that they are shedding more than usual. This could be the result of various factors like pregnancy, hormonal imbalance, or allergy. In that case, take it to a vet and find out the cause and possible treatment.

  • It’s necessary to check your cat’s ears for wax, infection or debris at least once a week. Healthy inner ears are generally pale pink and this means that they don’t carry debris. If you find that your cat’s ears are caked with wax or you detect an odor, take them for a veterinary exam.

Just like you floss everyday but go to a dentist once in a while, going to an expert for professional grooming is sometimes necessary. Additionally, the groomers are trained to handle pets during such procedures and they can surely save you from claw marks. Go ahead and find a cat grooming service near you!
