How To Ensure Your Dog Is Enjoying Diwali Just As Much As You

Diwali, a time for festivities, joy and celebration are always fun for you. But as a pet owner, it will also be a difficult time for you as you will see how this festival affects your pet. The noisy fireworks scare your pet and make them very anxious during this time.

Worry not, here are 5 tips you can use to ensure your pet is happy and active during this happy occasion:

1. Enjoy the fireworks from outside:

No doubt Diwali is the festival of lights and all that is colourful, but it might not seem the way for your pooch. He/she is sure to be cowering under the bed if you keep the windows and doors open. So for their health and your own, it is always better to keep the windows and doors closed while people are bursting fireworks, thereby, keeping out the noise and the smoke. If at all you would like to see the fireworks, ensure you are at a place like a terrace and witness it, rather than a place that’ll disturb your pet.

2. Comfort and protection for your pet:

If you have pesky neighbours who have decided to burst loud and noisy crackers then you must take all the steps to ensure your pet is comfortable. Get their favourite corner of the house prepped and ready for the ‘Diwali days’ so that instead of hiding under the bed, they can be comfortable in their own warm corner with their doggy bed and blankets. Also get them a few extra toys to play with and most importantly get them doggy earmuffs. These may not block out the noise completely but will definitely reduce it to a large extent.

3. Lights and lamps to be kept at bay:

Dogs also get attracted to bright and colourful lights so as a responsible owner you must keep the lights and lamps out of the reach of your pets. The oil can be very sticky and bunch up their fur and the fire and can harm them deeply. It is also essential to keep a first aid kit around just in case of any accidents. Even items like fairy lights and cable lights can be risky for them as they might get tangled in it and the constant light exposure might cause them some burns.  So if you are decorating, then decorate with your pets in mind.

4. Sugar is not your pet’s friend:

Diwali is a time when sweets and sugar are always overloaded in the house and your pets know it too. So though a sugar rush is something you enjoy, your pets definitely shouldn’t indulge in them. The sugar will not work well in your canine pal’s digestive system and will definitely cause elevated insulin levels that can even be deadly to them.

5. Spread the word and the love:

You might already be doing this but this might not be the case with many pet owners.  So as a caring pet owner, be sure to spread the word to make your friends also follow suit. Also if you happen to notice any stray dogs or cats, do whatever you can to help them also get through this time of pain for them.

Diwali is a time of togetherness so as a caring pet owner, do your bit and stand up for making the streets a safe place for dogs and cats alike.
