The traditional means of washing and drying clothes meant giving clothes to your neighborhood dhobhi or washer man.The Washer man/woman would take the clothes to the dhobhighat to get it washed. However this was done in rather unhygienic conditions and the same water was reused multiple times.In addition the process involved beating the clothes with a mallet or pelting the fabric against stones or in the wash pens. Post the rinsing, the clothes are left to dry in the hot sun. This left many people with a feeling that their clothes were not treated well and the quality of water was highly circumspect. However, out of sight was out of mind and customer did not bother much due to lack of efficient alternatives, as long as the work got done. Years later the washing machine as a device for washing and drying clothes at home made its foray into Indian households. This changed the landscape, quite a bit as people started investing in washing machines and synthetic detergents.Given that there was a latent demand for these products, the washing machine really took off.
