India is the largest producer of films and the second oldest film industry in the world. It is no surprise then that India also homes some really prominent production houses. Some of these date back to even before independence. Production houses are responsible for raising funds, budgeting and scheduling of a project.

From introducing some really talented actors and directors to the industry to producing some of the biggest blockbusters of Indian cinema, here are some of the biggest production houses of India who’ve made a mark!

1. Yash Raj Films

Established in 1970 by Yash chopra, Yash Raj Films has produced some of the most iconic movies of Indian Cinema such as Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kabhie Kabhie, Saathiya, and Dil To Paagal Hai to name a few. It is now helmed by Yash Chopra’s son, Aditya Chopra. They also have their own music label called Yash Raj Music under their home banner. Earlier in 2004, a leading international report placed them 27th in the biggest film production houses across the world. 

2.  Rajshri Productions

Established in 1947 by Tarachand Barjatya, this production house has made several critically acclaimed and commercially successful movies in their long span in the industry. Aarti was the first release of this production company. It later went on to produce popular movies such as Dosti, Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Hum Saath Saath hai to name a few.

3.  Dharma Productions

From their first production, the widely successful Dostana, Dharma productions went on to produce some of the biggest Bollywood hits such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kal Ho Na Ho and Wake Up Sid. Established by Yash Johar in 1979, this production house was taken over by his son Karan Johar after his death.

4. Eros International Media

Founded by Arjan Lulla, in 1977, this production house has been producing and distributing movies for the past 39 years! Now helmed by his sons, Kishore Lulla and Sunil Lulla, this company also has a library of films which includes over 700 with digital rights for it. Some of the popular movies produced or distributed by this group are 3 Idiots, Mr India, Om Shanti Om, etc.

5.  Red Chillies Entertainment

Started as Dreamz Unlimited by Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan and friends, it was re-branded and founded as Red Chillies Entertainment in 2002, along with his wife Gauri Khan. Other than production and distribution, this company is also credited as a premier visual effects company. The blockbuster Main Hoon Na directed by Farah Khan was this production house’s first venture. Some of the other high grossing produced by them are Om Shanti Om, Billu Barber, Chennai Express, My Name is Khan etc.
