Eligibility

Bachelor’s degree holders in Engineering/Technology/Architecture and those who are in the final year of such programs.
Master’s degree holders in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications or equivalent and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programs.

Stage 1: In this stage (prelims) the exam is a purely objective pattern. Engineering subjects, Engineering mathematics & reasoning are also included, hence the GATE preparation is nearly 70% of IES preliminary exam preparation.
Stage 2: The foundation on the subject built in stage 1, is useful for conventional (Mains) of IES.
Stage 3: Face-to-face interview

The following pattern is followed in the exam. The important point to be kept in mind is that GATE also has negative marking. This means that the candidate should exercise caution in answering only questions that they’re absolutely sure of, in order to avoid it. Total number of questions: 65 Duration: 3 hours Total Marks: 100 Negative Marking: 1/3 marks. There are two types of questions that are asked in the examination- Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) of 1 mark each and Numerical data type questions of 2 marks each. Numerical questions are those which do not have multiple choice options (i.e. a, b, c, d). Instead, the candidates are required to fill in the blanks with the answers. Real values have to be entered on the virtual keypad displayed on the monitor by using a mouse. NOTE: Physical keyboard will be deactivated. NOTE: No negative marking for Numerical data type questions. How long is the GATE score card valid for? The GATE scorecard is valid for a duration of 3 years from the date of issue. Students can use it as a standard to get admission to colleges they prefer during that duration.
