Is a doctor’s prescription required to undergo a sonogram test?

A sonogram test is a method of imaging that includes the usage of sound waves to scan the organs inside your body. The test provides the physician with information on the affected parts and helps him move on with the right treatment. A sonogram helps diagnose any swelling, pain, or infection in the inner organs. It is also used to examine the fetus of a pregnant woman. You will need a doctor’s prescription for a sonogram only if you are pregnant. If not, there’s no need for a prescription.

Is it necessary to fast before an ultrasound imaging?

It is necessary to fast for at least 6 to 11 hours approx. before going in for an ultrasound imaging because the food or the water inside your stomach can block the waves and make it difficult for the technician to get a clear scan of your internal organs. If you eat or drink before an ultrasound, the food gets digested and produces air, which in turn fills up the abdomen, thus making it difficult for the ultrasound waves to see past the air. Fasting prior to the scan helps reduce this gas in the abdomen region, which makes your internal organs clearly visible and expands the gall bladder.

Is the expected date of delivery and weight estimation 100% accurate?

Estimating the fetal weight is essential for doctors to manage labor and delivery. It also helps in avoiding risks and dangers during the birth process. The due date and the weight of the fetus cannot be determined accurately, and they vary on a few points. The due date can be estimated by counting 40 weeks after your last menstrual period is over. You can also reduce the 3 months from your last menstrual period by adding 7 days. However, it is just an estimation, and only 4–5% of babies are born on the estimated dates. The weight of the fetus can be estimated using ultrasound methods before the actual delivery date.

What is the difference between ultrasound & sonography?

An ultrasound is a device that helps take pictures of the internal organs in the human body, whereas a sonogram is a picture generated by the ultrasound. A Sonography makes use of ultrasound as a tool to diagnose the organs. It uses sound waves with a high frequency (ultrasound waves) produced by a transducer device to scan the internal parts, including the blood vessels and tissues, and determine the blood flow. It also locates the fetus in pregnant women and determines age, due date, abnormalities, and complications. Sonography is a much-preferred technique because it does not use radiation, takes less time, and is one of the safest ways.:

Which scan is best for pregnancy?

Ultrasound is the safest and most preferred scan for pregnancy. It checks for the growth and development of the fetus and multiple pregnancies and detects any abnormalities. The ultrasound does not predict accurate information but is still highly used by physicians because it is the most secure for both the mother and the fetus. Usually, a woman gets her ultrasound scan any time between 16 to 20 weeks of her pregnancy or sometimes during her first trimester. Doctors usually recommend this scan if a woman has heavy bleeding, pain in her abdomen, birth defects, or any history of miscarriage or complications. Other ultrasound pregnancy tests include amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling, performed when there are fetus abnormalities or birth defects.
