The University Grants Commission (UGC) will be introducing a new degree course called the Bachelor of Vocational Studies (B Voc). It is also expected to start a new Teacher Education Centre, an ambitious project of 300 crores to be started in Kakinada. The Vice Chairman ofUGCProf.H. Devarajannounced this during his address as Chief Guest at the Valedictory of Bi-Decennail Celebrations of M.O.P.Vaishnav College for Women, Chennai. Lamenting on the lack of encouragement by the state governments to autonomous educational institutions, he said that the MHRDS is coming up with a new program called RUSA as a part of which the centre would provide 61% of the funding while the state would provide 35% for higher education.
Dr. K. Nirmala Prasad, Principal, M.O.P Vaishnav College for Women presented a brief on the Bi-Decennial community projects. Donations in cash and kind collected as part of this project were presented to Friends of Tribal Society, six rural schools and some city government schools.

The highlight of the program was the recognition of prominent Alumni of M.O.P. Vaishnav College for excellence in their respective fields. Playback singer S. Saindhavi, Film artist, dancer and founder of Rangamandira, Dr.Swarnamalya Ganesh, Film maker and publisher KiruthigaUdayanidhi, International cricketer Thirushkamini M.D were some of the famous alumni who were felicitated. “I am very proud and happy to be a part of the M.O.P Legacy. I am very happy to receive this award on Vijayadasami,” said Saindhavi on receiving the award. Said KiruthigaUdayanidhi, the director of the recently hit movie Vanakam Chennai, “It is really good to be back. Everything I learnt was from here. This college supported me throughout and I am happy to win this award today.”
“M.O.P is like home to me. To receive an award from the institution from which I studied is like a pat on the back to do better. I have always been very fond of this college and sitting here and cheering for the principal and the staff made me feel like I was back in the college. It is a great feeling,” Said Swarnamalya.
Winners of the National Level Photography Competition held as part of the Bi-Decennial celebrations by the Department of Communication and Media Studies were awarded trophies.SauravDagdelwar from Jawaharlal Darda Institute of Engineering and Technology, Maharashtra, Nishanth R.K. from Anna University, Chennai and AshwanthRajanDayal from SRM Arts and Science College, Chennai won the first three prices respectively.
Guests of Honour included Professor K. Aludiyapillai, I.A.S. Retd., former Vice Chancellor of M.K. University, Profesoor S. Karunanidhi, former NSS Co-ordinator, Member-Syndicate, University of Madras, Ms.BharatiBaskar, Senior Vice-President, Citibank who spoke about the importance of holistic education and the pioneering activities of the college.
