CLAT, or the Common Law Admission Test, is a national-level entrance test undertaken by Undergraduate and Postgraduate students to get admission into Law programs. Around 22 National Law Universities in India take in students based on their CLAT scores. Conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities, CLAT is also used by some affiliated organizations and universities to admit students and recruit them.
CLAT Eligibility
The following are some of the Eligibility criteria for CLAT examinations:
- No upper age limit for Undergraduate students for CLAT
- A student should have a minimum percentage in 10th and 12th grade to be qualified for the exam like the below:
- General, OBC, PWD, PIO, NRI, OCI categories – 45% or equivalent grade
- ST/SC – 40%
- Higher scores in the legal Aptitude section
- Higher Age
- Draw lots ( Computerized)
- Students appearing for public examinations during March/April 2023 can also take the test provided they submit evidence of passing during admissions. It is to be noted that if candidates secure fail marks or less than the required percentage, they will not be eligible for admission.

CLAT Application
The conducting body usually releases the CLAT Application forms on the official website consortiumofnlus.ac.in. The candidate can apply for CLAT using the following instructions:
- Visit the official website and click the Register option where the personal details like Name, contact, and password to create an account.
- The next step is to fill up the CLAT online application Form.
- Upload the required documents.
- Pay the required fee amount, which is Rs.4000 (General, PwD, OBC, PIO, OCI, and NRI) and Rs.3500 (ST, SC, and BPL), respectively.
- Select the preferred test center in the next section and finish the process.
CLAT Admit Card
The candidates can download their admit cards from the official website of the NLU consortium. The candidate can download the admit card from their portals and have it safe, for they will not be allowed to attend the exam without it. The following is some of the information mentioned in the CLAT Admit Card:
- Name and DOB
- Passport size photo
- Roll and application numbers
- Exam center and its address
- Name of the parents
- Exam Date
- Reporting time
If there are any discrepancies regarding the admit card, the candidate should contact the exam authorities as soon as possible.

CLAT Exam Pattern

CLAT Mock Test
The candidate can score great marks in CLAT if he/she takes many mock tests to practice. Candidates can go through the previous years’ question papers to effectively comprehend the test pattern, syllabus, and also important questions that are frequently repeated. CLAT Sample Papers
Like the previous year’s question papers, the CLAT sample papers also prove to be very effective while preparing for the exam. CLAT Answer Key
The consortium usually releases the answer key for the CLAT exam on the official website (consortiumofnlus.ac.in) after the exams are over. The students can download the same by entering their login credentials. The release of answer keys for CLAT 2024 is expected around December 2023.
CLAT Cut off
The exam authorities usually announce the expected cut-off for the CLAT exams prior to the announcement of the results. The expected cut-off for the CLAT 2023 was 75-80 for general, 70-75 for OBC, 60-65 for SC/ST, 70-75 for EWS, and 50-55 for PwD.
CLAT Counselling Process
The CLAT counseling process is a way of filling up vacant seats for various UG and PG law courses in various NLUs. The counseling process is conducted in five rounds online. The candidates can update their preferences if seats are vacant for their category. The process includes various steps like registrations, allotment of seats, accepting colleges, and reporting to the allotted university. The authorities will announce the counseling dates on the website. The candidate has to pay a fee of Rs.30000 (General Category) and Rs.20000 (SC/ST candidates)

Around 23 National Law universities and 60 private institutions accept CLAT as a part of their admission processes. These universities and institutions sign an MoU (Memorandum of Agreement) with the consortium for agreeing to use CLAT scores as a criterion for their admissions.
