UPSC approves two extra attempts for Civil Services Exams

Here is some good news for civil services aspirants who are running 30 years of age and have exhausted their four attempts. The Central government has approved two additional attempts (w.e.f. Civil Services Examination 2014) with consequential age relaxation of maximum age of candidates, if required.

According to existing rules, candidates are allowed up to four attempts and the maximum age limit is 30 years. SC and ST candidates are allowed any number of attempts with no restriction. And, for Other Backward Classes (OBCs), a maximum of seven attempts are allowed.

As per the latest government, those running 30 years of age will get two additional attempts till 32 years of age.

The upper age limit is relaxed up to five years for SCs/STs and up to three years for OBCs among others.

Upper age limit is relaxed up to five years for those who had been domiciled in Jammu & Kashmir from January 1, 1980 to December 31, 1989.

Relaxation of up to three years is applicable to Defence services personnel disabled in operations during conflicts and released as a consequence thereof.

Blind, orthopedically handicapped and deaf-mute candidates can avail upper age relaxation of up to 10 years.

Note: Age relaxation of up to 32 years is not applicable to those who had used up six attempts before 30 years of age.

About Civil Service Examinations

The Civil Service Examinations is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to carry out selection for vacancies in the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS) etc. The exam has three stages: Preliminary, Mains and Interview. The preliminary exam for this year is scheduled tentatively to be held on August 24, 2014.
