About USMLE exam
The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a three-step test for medical licensure in the United States of America. The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) along with the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) sponsors the test. USMLE Exam Pattern
USMLE exam is divided into 3 steps. Each step has a different exam pattern. While Step 1 assesses the knowledge of concepts of medical science, Step 2 assesses clinical knowledge and patient care process, and Step 3 assesses the application of foundational sciences and patient management ability of aspirants.
Step 1
- Covers 18 medical disciplines and inter-disciplines
- 8-hour exam conducted in one day
- MCQ type – 7 X 60-minute blocks
- Each block contains 40 questions or less
Step 2
- Step 2 is conducted in two parts – Clinical Knowledge (CK) and Clinical Sciences (CS)
- Clinical Knowledge is MCQ-based in which questions could be Sequential Item Sets or Single-Item Questions
- Aspirants can take this step in any country of origin
- Aspirants taking the Clinical Sciences test must travel to the United States
- Clinical Knowledge test covers 350 MCQs in 9 hours
- Clinical Sciences test assesses candidates through the simulated patient care process
- Test takers examine 12 patients for 15 minutes each
Step 3
- This is a two-day test conducted in the United States
- The test is conducted across 6 centers
- This step covers the Foundation of Independent Practice (FIP) & Advanced Clinical Medicine (ACM)
- Candidates must have cleared USMLE Step 1 & Step 2 to appear for Step 3
- FIP has 260 MCQs divided into 6 x 60-minute block, with each block containing 44 questions
- Clinical Sciences test assesses candidates through the simulated patient care process
- ACM has 200 MCQs divided into 6 X 45-minute blocks, with each block containing 33 questions

USMLE Eligibility
For Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 2 CS
- Any officially enrolled medical student, or a graduate, of an American or Canadian school program leading to an MD degree accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, OR
- Any officially enrolled medical students, or a graduate of, an American medical school leading to DO degree accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or
- Any officially enrolled medical student, or a graduate of, a medical school located outside America and Canada, but listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and meeting the eligibility requirements of ECFMG
- Knowledge of Basic Medical Principles
- Patient Management Ability Assessment
To be eligible for Step 3, candidates must:
- Pass Step 1, Step 2 CK & CS, and
- Obtain an MD or DO degree from an LCME or AOA accredited US or Canadian medical school
- Possess a degree equivalent to MD from a reputed medical school outside the US and Canada, but listed with the World Directory of Medical Schools
