HJS exam is a special exam for law graduates to become members of the subordinate judiciary of the country. The state governments together with the respective high courts hire members of the higher judiciary based on this examination.
HJS exam structure
The HJS examination is conducted in three successive stages – Preliminary exam, Mains and Interview / Viva-Voce. Preliminary examination: This is the first examination that serves as a qualifying criteria for Mains. It consists of objective type questions. The percentage of the qualifying marks varies with every state. For General category students, the minimum qualifying percentage is 60 percent and for reserved category candidates, it is 55 percent. Mains examination: This exam consists of subjective type questions and there are three to four papers. The marks obtained in this are counted for final selection. Interview / Viva-Voce: This is the final stage where the candidates are assessed on the basis of their personality, general interest and intelligence. Eligibility To apply for the HJS exam, the candidates must have completed their graduation in law. Additionally, they must have at least 7 years of experience in litigation practice.
