PTE Overview

What is PTE? The Pearson Test of English is an academic language test that students and aspiring professionals have to take before migrating to a predominantly English-speaking nation. The test, abbreviated to PTE, is recognized by the very best educational institutions across the globe. The test assesses the competency of candidates in the English language to ensure that there are no hiccups in their personal and professional lives once they do migrate.

The examination does not test candidates based on proficiency in English literature. It focuses more on the practical ability of the students in using English to communicate and also understand when others try to communicate with them. Candidates are allotted three hours to complete the test, which is completely computer-based. Its grading system, which features multi-level grading, leads to understanding candidates’ English speaking, writing, listening and reading skills better.

What does the PTE test in candidates?

How Many Institutes Accept PTE Scores?

The PTE Academic Test is conducted throughout the year and is the preferred choice of students interested in taking admission to an institution or university in an English-speaking country. The candidates’ scores remain valid for exactly two years from the date of announcement of results.

The PTE General Test is conducted three times every year; once in May, once in June, and once in December. This test features only two papers – spoken and written. The scores of this test reflect the level of basic English communicative skills amongst candidates and remain valid for life.

FAQ - PTE Coaching

Is the PTE Academic Examination tougher than other standardized English language tests such as TOEFL and IELTS?

All three examinations are quite similar in terms of what they cover. So, it would be wrong to say that the PTE Academic exam is tougher or easier than TOEFL and IELTS. The only difference that the PTE Academic examination offers to candidates is that the results can be viewed much faster than they can be viewed for the TOEFL and IELTS examinations. This is due to the fact that the PTE Academic examination is a completely computerized examination.

How are students’ scores calculated during the checking process?

As the entire checking process is computerized, the conducting body is constantly making upgrades to its scoring algorithms to automate the scoring process better. Even though candidates can request re-scoring if they are unsatisfied with their final scores, the computerized scoring process is typically free from errors that humans may make during checking.

What score in the PTE Examination is considered good?

As the highest marks that can be achieved in the PTE Academic examination is 90, candidates can consider 80 scores to be good. However, the score that would be good enough for candidates to gain admission into overseas colleges and universities of their choice depends on the colleges and universities. Every college and university that recognizes and accepts PTE scores has its own individual requirements that candidates can check on the official websites of the preferred colleges and universities.

It is essential for candidates to know the required PTE marks for their preferred colleges and universities beforehand, as it would help them to prepare in such a way that they can achieve the required scores and be eligible for admission in their preferred colleges and universities.

What happens if I have to cancel my examination at the last minute?

Last-minute cancellations are generally rare. However, if you get caught up in something that requires you to cancel your scheduled PTE Academic examination, you can cancel and reschedule another examination. However, as per rules and regulations laid down by the conducting body of the examination, last-minute cancellations do not qualify for refunds. If candidates are aware of any problems that may lead to cancellation beforehand, they should cancel the examination at the earliest for getting refunds.

I attempted the PTE Academic examination multiple times and failed to get the desired results. Should I keep attempting the examination going into the future?

As the conducting body of the examination has not laid down any specific rules regarding the number of times that candidates can appear for the examination, you are free to attempt the examination as many times as you like in the future.

However, if you have failed to achieve the desired results in the past, you should work on your weaknesses and also improve your strengths through regular practice. The results are presented in a graph-view, which allows students to identify the reasons why they failed to achieve their desired scores.
