TOEFL Exam 2021: Syllabus
TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language) is a popular language proficiency test taken by several students and other common people who are planning to migrate to foreign countries. This test is conducted by ETS (Educational Testing Services) every year. It is conducted to test the language skill of an individual under four major categories like Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. With ample amount of time taken for exam preparation one can achieve the desired score in TOEFL.
The time duration for the entire exam is 4 hours along with the breaks. The syllabus for the TOEFL is given below for all the four sections of the exam:
Reading: Exam duration(60 to 80 minutes)
Total number of questions: 36 to 56 questions
TOEFL Section-wise Syllabus
In this section, the candidate will be given three to five passages and will be asked nearly 15 questions from the passages. One can score in this section by carefully reading the passages and answering the questions. The comprehension responses should be apt and to the point.
Listening
- Exam duration: 60 to 90 minutes
- Total number of questions: 34 to 51 questions
Question mode
- Type A: 3 – 4 lectures (6 questions for each)
- Type B: 2 -3 conversations (5 questions for each)
In this section, the listening capacity of the candidate is tested effectively. A conversation will be played for the candidate and will be asked to listen to it. The conversation will be both short and long. Once after the recorded audio chat, multiple choice questions will be asked. Also, numerous questions will be asked based on the long conversations. The candidates should stay focused while listening so that they can be equipped with right answers.
Speaking
- Exam duration 17 to 20 minutes
- Total number of questions 4 questions
Question mode
- Type A: 1 independent task with 15 seconds of preparation time<
- Type B: 3 integrated tasks – Read / Listen / Speak are given with 30 seconds of preparation time.
If a candidate is aiming to score the best, then a good performance in the Speaking section is important. The examiners will look out for the fluency, choice of words and the correct placement of it.
Writing
- Exam duration 50 minutes<
- Total number of questions 2 questions
Question mode
- Type A: 1 integrated task under Read / Listen / Speak will be given.<
- Reading – 3 minutes
- Listening – 2 minutes
- Writing -15 minutes
- Type B: 1 independent task for which 30 minutes of time will be given.
The central part of writing section will be presenting essays. It is important that your essay addresses a particular topic effectively. The flow of the comprehension should be good with essential explanations and support. To score good under this section, make sure you do not make any grammatical errors. Also, be wise in choosing the right words at appropriate places.
