Mysore Lights up for Dasara!
When it comes to Navratri, many of us don’t think beyond the traditional Kolu and revelrous Dandiya nights. However, there is another festivity associated with the nine auspicious days- the grand splendour that is Dasara… especially in Mysore!
Dasara festivities began in Mysore 402 years ago and take place amidst great pomp and fervour. Things usually get off to a devotional start at the Chamundi Temple on the first day of Navratri. Revelries start late in the evening, with a host of cultural programmes, at the Amba Vilas Palace, against the backdrop of folk and classical music.
All roads lead to the great Mysore Palace where almost one lakh bulbs bathe the monument in a golden hue. The palace is the epicentre of activity during Dasara, and plays host to a blend of classical dance and music programmes.

This year, the 403rd edition of Dasara festivities in Mysore promises a strong line-up of artistes who will regale the audience at seven main venues, including Kalamandira, Jaganmohan Palace, Ganabharati, Town Hall, Kuppanna Park, and Chikka Gadiyara. Over 150 cultural programmes have been planned for the duration.
The icing on the cake is a film festival and you get an opportunity to savour culinary delights from across India at the Dasara Food Mela.
Other events include an elaborate flower show and cultural events that include a theatre fest at Rangayana, as well as adventurous sports and a district sports meet.
During this season, Mysore truly transforms into a fairy land. So, there is no reason you shouldn’t pack your bags and head there at the earliest!
