Mohamed Imthah from Delhi

"Recommended--comfortable with good restaurants, easy to get transportation via the hotel staff, although not good for walking.I have stayed at the Metropolitan Hotel New Delhi twice, once at the beginning of a week-long Rajasthan tour, and again at the end. I prefer it to the Taj Ambassador, the other Delhi hotel in which I've stayed; I found it to be more elegant and comfortable, at a similar price. My experience with hotels in India has been that the service is almost always exceptional. That was the case with the Metropolitan New Delhi. Check-in was quickly accomplished with the usual steps (copies made of passports, emergency credit card put on file, etc.) Our luggage was brought to our room promptly by the porter after we headed upstairs. The only differentiator between the service here and in other Indian hotels where I have stayed is that the Metropolitan Hotel has (and enforces) a no tip policy. All of the staff wear a name tag that also says "No tips please." Now, we did discover that the staff will accept tips in more private situations (i.e. when they are delivering something to your room and none of their coworkers or supervisors are watching), but it was nice to not have to worry about tipping eighteen people on your way to the room. The hotel rooms themselves were comfortably furnished and quite cozy. We stayed in a double during our first visit, and it had two not-quite-full-sized beds. While we would certainly have preferred larger beds, they were an adequate size for weary travelers to sleep in. I'm just glad we got these beds at the beginning of our trip when we were worn out from the plane and less picky about where we slept! The second time we stayed there, we had a single larger bed. Regardless of the size, all of the beds were comfortable and plushly appointed with fluffy comforters. The rooms, while on the smaller side, were clean and had everything we needed. The hotel has several restaurants. We tried two. The first restaurant, Patio, is located on the lobby level and features complimentary buffet breakfast each morning. The breakfast spread was one of the larger ones we saw and included hot and cold entrees and eggs made to order. We also ate at the restaurant in the evening once, and had expensive dal. While the dal was hot, delicious, and exactly what we wanted, it was a relatively high price tag for a simple dish (approximately $15 USD).The second restaurant we tried was called Chutney. It specializes in, you guessed it, Indian chutneys. We ate at the restaurant mainly because it was late and we were tired, but we were surprised with one of the better meals of our trip. The chicken biryani was particularly excellent here. I would highly recommend that you try Chutney if you stay in or near the Metropolitan.Oddly enough, there is also a nightclub/bar in the lobby of the Metropolitan Hotel. It is quite noisy in the lobby during the nightclub's hours of operation due to the thumping music. There are doormen who vet people before they can enter, and velvet ropes--it seemed like a silly slice of New York in an Indian hotel. Some of the people in our group went inside for a drink and reported that it was nothing spectacular. I wasn't a huge fan of the fact that the only place to get a nightcap in the hotel was also a dance club--it was definitely too loud to hold a conversation. Fortunately, you could not hear any lobby noises in our hotel room on the upper floors! The hotel also features a number of shops and a spa. I did browse the main gift shop ("Craft House") but found it rather expensive for what appeared to be generic items (silk ties, scarves, jewelry). We had the hotel arrange us taxis one night and were very impressed with the high-quality and honesty of the transportation provided. They drove us cross-town and back for what we all felt was a very fair price. I have heard some hotels will collaborate with vendors like drivers to make money from tourists, so I was really pleased by this positive experience. My main complaint about the hotel is that while it is just outside of Connaught Place, one cannot in fact walk there safely. Several members of the hotel staff urged us not to leave the hotel on foot even though Connaught Place was technically walking distance. I had been excited by the hotel's location and was disappointed to realize it was not truly convenient to any restaurants, shops, or bars.Otherwise, I'd say the only thing the Metropolitan Hotel suffers from is the lack of a strong brand essence. While I don't love the Taj Ambassador in Delhi, you know you are staying in a Taj while you're there. The Metropolitan Hotel was generic in many ways. This is by no means a reason not to stay there--but just an observation about what might improve the experience."
