The exploration of Hindustani classical music began when I was a child. My father and sister knew Carnatic music, but I was never really drawn to the Chanchalta (playful energy) of the Carnatic style. It was the Vilambit (the slow rhythm of Hindustani classical music) which attracted me. I was very interested in singing and led the prayer at school. I just mimic the Pitch and Sur of whatever I liked, be it a Bhajan or a folk song without understanding of ragas or Taal. I just understood the feeling behind a composition. In Std. X, I won a singing competition and one of the judges offered to teach me classical music but I could not follow it up because of family disapproval. By the time I had done my B-Com, I had enough of a life without music. I gave up everything and set out for Veereshwara Punyashram, a Gurukul in Dharwad District where music is taught like a life-lesson rather than a skill. The next seven years in the Gurukul were the most difficult and rewarding for me and everything what I knew up till then was wiped from my consciousness. When I went there, I realized that I didn’t even know Sa Re Ga Ma! A blind child who had been abandoned at the doorstep of the ashram and had grown up listening to the masters around him taught me how to recognize each of the Swaras. He would give me a heap of tamarind seeds and tell me to a handful and put it aside for each correct rendition of the Sargam and when the seeds were all put aside, he would ask me to start all over again! We had to get up before dawn, eat no salt and live frugally. The discipline changed me forever. When I left the Gurukul, I obtained a silver bracelet, signifying my commitment to music. After Gurukul, I became a student of Ustad Faiyyaz Khan Sarangi. I am committed to teaching music to deserving students. I could not learn music when I was a child. I do not want any child to suffer that loss. I also know now that music is not about singing, but about feeling. I compose and write songs to teach to my students. When you discover the riches of classical music, you do not want to regurgitate old compositions. You want to savor the freedom of composing new things. My life consists of music and Riyaz. My family has more or less accepted my passion for music; every Jeev (living thing) has a Prakruti (tendency) and it will follow that ultimately. Presently, as full-time music teacher, I have two Gurukuls, one in Vidyaranyapura and the other in Kempapura, where I pass on the knowledge I have gained in the field of music. Music is like meditation for me. I will never do anything else. Contact us for more details.
