Optical thumb scanners: These scanners capture an optical image, basically a photograph, and use algorithms to detect the unique patterns on the surface like ridges and unique marks, by analyzing the light and dark areas of the image.
Capacitive scanners: This is the most common type of thumbprint scanner used these days. They comprise of tiny capacitor circuits which collect data about a thumbprint. As capacitors store electrical charge, connecting them to conductive plates on the scanner allows them to track the details of the thumbprint. The charge in the capacitor changes slightly when a thumb’s ridge is placed over these conductive plates, whereas an air gap leaves the capacitor charge relatively unchanged. A specially designed op-amp integrator circuit tracks these changes, which are recorded by the analog-to-digital converter.
Ultrasonic scanners: In these scanners, an ultrasonic pulse is transmitted against the thumb. Some pulse is absorbed while some of it bounces back to the in-built sensor, depending upon the pores, ridges and other details that are unique to each fingerprint.
