It is always a matter of great prestige to become a civil servant. Lakhs of aspirants take the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exams to enter the elite profile. Who are IES officers?
These are the officers who take care of the technical and managerial functions of the Union Government. Normally, the officers are engineers coming from these four streams – Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering. Civil Engineering:
Border Roads Engineering Service, Central Engineering Service, Central Engineering Service, Survey of India Service, Indian Defence Service of Engineers, Central Water Engineering Service and Indian Railway Stores Service, among others.
Mechanical Engineering:
Central Electrical & Mechanical Engineering Service, Central Power Engineering Service, Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Indian Army; Indian Defence Service of Engineers and Indian Naval Stores Service, among others.
Electrical Engineering:
Central Power Engineering Service, Central Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Service, Indian Naval Armament Service, Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers, Indian Supply Service and Indian Naval Stores Service, among others.
Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering:
Indian Radio Regulatory Service, Central Power Engineering Service, Indian Ordnance Factories Service, Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers, Indian Army and Indian Inspection Service, among others.
The duty of the IES officers will depend on their engineering expertise and the service or cadre in which they are recruited. So, obviously, the IES officers have a pivotal role to play in the development of the country.
What is the IES exam pattern?
The aspirant’s technical knowledge is tested to the core in this examination. The officers are selected through a three-level competitive examination, which is known as Engineering Services Examination conducted by the UPSC. Now, let’s take a look at how the Engineering Services Examination is structured.
Level – 1(Prelims)
- General Studies and Engineering Aptitude. The questions in this section will be of objective type.
- Specific paper on the engineering discipline concerned. Objective type questions.
Level – 2(Mains)
- Engineering discipline – paper 1
- Engineering discipline – paper 2
Level – 3(Interview Test)
- Personality test. Here the interview board will judge the acumen of the job aspirant.
How to prepare for IES exams?
There should be a clear roadmap to cover all the topics. The student should have a firm grip over the concepts of engineering to face the examination with confidence.
