"Established in 1817 as Hindu college, this is one of the oldest colleges in India. The courses taught in this college include general streams like Maths, Stats, Physics, English, Bangla, Economics, Philosophy, History, Political Science, and Sociology among others. All the courses taught here are honours courses at a degree level (bachelors). Some courses are also taught at master’s level (Physics, Bangla, Geology etc). The selection procedure is rigorous with a highly competitive entrance exam filtering out most of the applicants. The past academic scores are also taken into account. This college boasts of some of the best faculty in India with excellence in their fields, combined with the selection process makes it one of the best colleges in the country. Presidency College has been consistently ranked as one of the top colleges in India by various magazines over the decades. The student body consists of candidates from several states in the eastern region. Outstation candidates have access to the college hostel, named Hindu hostel which is located within stone’s throw from the college. Usually the science subjects have a higher male:female ration while arts subjects have it in the reverse order. Overall the ratio is tilted towards the female population. This college has been instrumental in shaping the academic landscape of the nation in several fields. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis was instrumental in founding statistics as a major academic field while working here. He later went on to establish the ISI’s (Indian Statistical Institute). In international circles in statistics academia, Mahalanobis’s work is highly regarded. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Swami Vivekanada, Rabindranath Tagore, Amartya Sen, S N Bose, Meghnad Saha, Satyajit Ray are among the big names who are connected to this institution in one way or another."
