Mahima Ministries is a grassroots service organisation whose people care for widows, orphans, AIDS patients and others in distress. Each person living at Mahima Ministries has a story to tell, stories of tragedy and abandonment. Some have experienced the tragic loss of a spouse or parent through AIDS. Others were abandoned, either by their parents or their relatives. Some came as small children. Others have come in their final years of life. In each case, they need ongoing physical care and loving nature, something the staff and volunteers of Mahima Ministries are committed to providing. The founder of Mahima Ministries, R.D. Maharaju, grew up in poverty, losing his parents at a young age. He eventually moved to Hyderabad. Working as a computer network administrator, he felt compelled to use his income to help others. In 2005, Mahima Ministries joined like-minded people to care for a few widows. As neighbours observed their work, they brought in orphans, patients presumed to be dying of AIDS, and others with critical needs. Eventually, the ministry grew beyond what Maharaju's personal income could support. Mahima Ministries now relies primarily on the generosity and kindness of others who want to help.
